A flat-plate solar collector mounted on the roof absorbs heat from the sun and transfers it to water stored in an insulated tank. In thermosiphon setups, hot water rises naturally to the tank. For split (dissociated) configurations, a small pump circulates the water between the panel and the tank.

Solar water heaters perform best in direct sunlight but will still absorb diffused solar energy on partly cloudy days. For extended periods of low sunlight, each unit includes a built-in electrical heater (1.5–2.5 kW) with a variable thermostat as backup.

The inner tank is made from 316L stainless steel (1.5 mm thick) for excellent corrosion resistance, insulated with 50 mm polyurethane foam, and housed in a zinc-aluminium outer shell with anti-UV tropicalised powder coating — built specifically for Mauritius’s climate.
